How to Use a SWOT Analysis in Your Job Search
First of all, why should you use a SWOT Analysis in your job search? Because the better you know yourself, the more informed decisions you can make. It’s another tool in your arsenal to help you learn, adjust, or take action to mitigate a weakness.
What is a SWOT Analysis? A SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or business venture. It helps identify both internal and external factors that can impact success. Why would you not want to do a SWOT analysis?
A SWOT analysis will give you the information to help you get ahead in the job search game. It will help make sure you are qualified for the jobs you are looking for. It can help you determine where you could better yourself and be more prepared for future action. And it can help you be more confident as you move forward.
Start by analyzing your career strengths, taking into account your work history and your education. Your SWOT analysis is only as good as your honesty.
Next, consider your Weaknesses. Be brutally honest, compare your strengths with the job or career you are looking to conquer.
Then look at your Opportunities, an opportunity could come from your list of weaknesses. Anything that can be changed or improved is an opportunity.
Lastly, consider your threats. Threats are the weaknesses that can’t be changed easily. In this case, it could be the unemployment rate or the job availability in a specific region or market.
After you have your analysis, you have a way of looking at your goals from your Opportunities. And a realistic one if you have been honest.
You can then make long-term and short-term goals that are helpful for you.
This will help you compare your strengths against job postings and provide a road map to getting the job you want.
I hope you find this helpful.
